The next morning, no one noticed that Sarah had been out of the house for a good part of the night, or that many of her socks were crumpled into one big ball at the foot of her bed. Nor did they notice that something heavy weighed on her mind. Something very heavy.

How do you ask your bratty brother and your new friend to join you in a supernatural Pokémon GO contest against aliens from another dimension? And also, how do you do this, and not have them think you’re completely nuts?

While she walked to school alongside Skip, Sarah thought about bringing it up then and there—but the moment never seemed right. Also, was it something you told someone right before homeroom? Skip would probably need a while to process this. (It had taken Sarah most of the night, and she still felt pretty freaked out.)

In the end, Sarah hatched a plan. She wrote a note and slipped it into Skip’s backpack when he wasn’t looking. The note said that someone had something very important to tell him—this was true, Sarah reminded herself—and that he should meet them by the tetherball court directly after school. Later at lunch, when Sarah saw Charlotte, she told her friend that Skip had something important to tell her, and wanted to meet up after school by the tetherball pole. Charlotte thought that was weird, but she didn’t say she wouldn’t go. Sarah decided this was maybe the best result she could hope for.

When the final school bell rang, Sarah positioned herself in a hidden position near the tetherball court. From where she stood, it would be difficult for anybody heading to the court to see her. Skip was the first to arrive. He made a show of pacing around the tetherball pole, looking for whoever might have left him the note. When nobody immediately showed up, he took out his phone and began to play Pokémon GO.

A few moments later, Charlotte showed up. “What?” she said to Skip.

“Huh?” he replied, putting away his phone.

“What did you want to see me about?”

“I didn’t want to see you,” Skip said. “Not everything is about you, you know. I’m here because …”

Sarah stepped out from her cover.

“You’re both here because I asked you here,” Sarah said. “Skip, I wrote that note. Charlotte, well, sorry for fibbing to you.”

Skip and Charlotte exchanged a surprised glance, then they both looked at Sarah for an explanation.

“What is this about?” asked Charlotte. “Does your brother have a crush on me, because ick! I am so not going there.”

Skip opened his mouth to say something, but Sarah cut him off. “Nobody has a crush on anybody. At least, not that I know of … I have something much more important to talk about.”

“Why did you need to trick us?” Charlotte asked.

“If I’d told you what this was really about, you would have called me crazy and not shown up.”

“As your brother …” Skip began mischievously. “I’ve been around you enough to pretty much say you’re crazy for certain.
